Let’s entertain a timeline of some of the milestones within the development of Arabic and Islamic calligraphy.
Consider this more a personal statement of my value attachment to the persons and events, rather than a comprehensive overview of the field historically. Or have a quick glimpse on the lenses I wear when I look at calligraphy. A perception, built upon knowledge of history, Islamic theology, but also practical understanding of the works of the key figures, and the role calligraphy plays in the Muslim majority world.
Considering the nature of my engagement with the craft that ultimately ended in writing Christian texts, I have noted down only primary sources, events and key calligraphers that have provided much food for thought to me.
